Ex is still feeling pretty good. I don't notice any side effects at all. We had the distraction of an upgrade to our phone and internet connection today, and that helped. We've been up to our elbows in computers all day.
A computer he was building would play sound tests and DVD sound, but no Windows applications sounds. I tried to help, but he was slowing me to death, so like Nick Burns The Computer Guy, I made him move aside, reinstalled the drivers software, fizzed around with it, and finally got both kinds of sounds working.
Because we had no internet connex most of the day, I had to break out my tiny little 10" Averatec because it works with my air card, which does not work with my new 64-bit work laptop. :-(. And then, I have my boss' wife's computer here, trying to clean and speed it up a little.
So, for most of today, on my little 2x4 foot folding table desk, I've had 3 laptops and 3 external drives, in addition to a pile of notes and another pile of wires.
Just behind me on the pool table is the desktop computer that the Ex has been building since before the cruise last spring.
Under the coffee table is the new HP we bought a week ago for our son, who's computer lost power in the midst of an installation and got its registry wrecked.
The Geek Squad offered to wipe it and restore it for $100, but he decided to bring it home instead. Using command line codes, I managed to glean his important files from the stuck computer and send him to school for a week with the new HP (which he didn't like much because of the slick touchpad).
The Ex somehow managed to get the computer restored; quite a feat with no recover disk and a wrecked D partition. By the time Son came back home, his original computer (a specially configured ACER) was all back to normal.
So now we still have the new HP. Should be exchanging that at Office Depot for something in the next few days. You only get 14 days to return it, and even then, you can only exchange it. I think we may end up keeping it because the HDMI port allows us to watch High Def sports through the internet to our TV in areas where we don't normally get those channels.
Just beyond the new HP in the box, is an old Dell. It still works, but it's maxed out at 2 gigs of ram, and not much good for today's software and online demands. Ex calls it his museum piece.
Over in the corner, not too far from the Ex's desk is his work computer in a computer bag. I don't even care what kind of computer it is.
Of course, I have the best computers in the house. My work computer is an HP Pavilion dv7 with dual core intel processors, ATI graphics with 1 gig dedicated memory on board, a 17.8" screen, fingerprint security scanning, webcam, mic, DVD, remote control and EIGHT GIGS OF RAM!
It weighs a ton, but it has enough power to handle big graphics, like... say, an image big enough to go around two sides of a 10x53 foot tractor trailer.
My other laptop is a mini 2.5-lb 10" Averatec. It only has 4 gigs of ram, but it's excellent for traveling, when I don't expect to be working with Semi-truck graphics. Its battery is shot. Only works when I can plug it into a wall somewhere. But otherwise, it is great for the road.
Then, finallly, as I complete my visual inventory of Ex's livingroom, I see his desktop on his 4x8-foot desk. I don't know exactly what it is, since he built it, but i can see two slide-in, lockable harddrives, a cd reader/writer, a dvd reader/writer, and in two 3.5" bays, he's got a 3.5" floppy drive, and some other kinda thing that has 6 USB ports and 4 firewire ports. He has an external USB device for all the smaller storage media.
Gosh, I didn't mean to get into all that. I could've said the same thing by saying we have more computers than Carter has pills, if you are old enough to get that reference.
Let's hope tomorrow the Ex is still feeling well, but that I will have more time for work and fewer computers on my desk!

WOW, you two really are computer techs (otherwise known as geeks!) And here I sit with my Lenovo T60, and that's the only computer in the house!....
ReplyDeleteWe did the chemo thing today. Went really well, did some Christmas shopping after chemo was done, and now it's time to start supper.... Have a good evening.
boss's wife's computer is a Lenovo R52, whatever that means. I like its sturdy keyboard and the two sets of mouse clickers above and below the touchpad.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, the screen has two "lines" from top to bottom, 1 inch from the edge on the left and 2 inches from the right edge -- I can't fix that, and don't know anyone who can.
They complained of "slowness," but I'm not finding much here that is slowing it down. I did find a dialup connection. If they are using that, THAT would certainly slow down things!
Ex made supper tonight. Pot roast in the crock pot! He made it, but he's not eating it. I'll post more, somewhere, later tonight.
It's all mostly Greek to me, ETC-----guess that should be Geek-talk! Sounds quite impressive. Can't imagine anything handling graphics that would wrap a semi!!!! COOL! Don't know how you keep it all straight or decide when to use what!
